Top Sensory Tools / Fidgets for All Ages

I think it’s safe to say we’ve all experienced some degree of sensory overwhelm at some point. However, for some, sensory overwhelm can be a bit (if not completely) debilitating. Feel a bit overwhelmed walking through Costco (or worse yet, a Trader Joes) during peak hours with the overhead florescent lighting beating down on you, carts and people be-bopping around, intense perfumes/cologne wafting around, and chaos echoing in the parking lot and reverberating across the concrete floors and tall ceilings? If that last sentence made your insides flip a bit… this blog is for you. OR let’s say you have a kiddo that’s a big feeler and you’re looking for a bit of additional physical support. Notice that strategic highlight of physical support? That’s because NOTHING replaces the support of a mental health provider and occupational therapist for truly supporting you OR your little one’s individual sensory and mental health needs. This is simply a quick and dirty hodgepodge of ideas and trinkets that I’ve recommend to patients and have used myself to help with nervous system calming/regulation/general fidgeting. Again, I can’t stress enough that these are THINGS not therapy so take these for what they are - simple, fun tools to help manage sensory input — NOT an individualized care plan, recommendation, or replacement for other therapies. That’s all, disclaimer over. Now have fun and happy fidgeting:

KIDDO SENSORY RESOURCES -

Harkla - it's all designed by Occupational Therapists and their email list is actually worth getting on - they send out GREAT information!

Kid’s Corner - Create a “safe corner” where it’s calm/darker (no/limited overhead lights) and add items like:

Out and About -

  • Wear a baseball cap to block out overhead florescent lighting

  • Loops - noise reducing ear plugs - these come in a variety of options. Some allow you to still converse, but takes the “edge” of surrounding noise while others are more powerful noise reducers

Sleep -

  • Hug Sleep Pod - soft and stretchy, but offers a compressive, deep hug kind of feel!

ADULT SENSORY RESOURCES -

Noise Reduction -

  • Loops - noise reducing ear plugs - these come in a variety of options. Some allow you to still converse, but takes the “edge” of surrounding noise while others are more powerful noise reducers.

Fidget Toys -
